Grand Bay
Nature
Grand Bay is a 13,000-acre swamp in southern Georgia that extends across parts of Lanier and Lowndes counties. Its wetlands include the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area, preserved for wildlife and education, and Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which serves recreational and educational purposes. The area’s public educational hub is the Grand Bay Wetland Education Center, operated through a partnership between the Coastal Plains Regional Educational Service Agency and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. With a boardwalk, classrooms, and an observation tower, the center supports environmental education, field trips, and accredited teacher training focused on wetland ecology, wildlife and plant identification, air quality, and plant adaptations.
