Red Wing crater is a deeply buried meteor impact structure in western North Dakota, about 24 kilometers southwest of Watford City. Roughly 9 kilometers wide and about 2,000 meters below the surface, it dates to about 200 million years ago in the Triassic and was identified through seismic studies because no rim or depression is exposed. Its modern significance emerged through oil exploration: Shell Oil's wells in 1965 and 1968 found no oil but revealed unusual rock thicknesses, and a 1972 True Oil Company well discovered an exceptionally thick oil column created by impact-tilted rocks that formed an unusual trap. In 1996, shock features in well samples confirmed its impact origin.
