Patriots proved to have participated in the Battle of Kettle Creek on February 14, 1779 included men of the Wilkes County Regiments Georgia Militia under Col. John Dooly, Lt. Col. Elijah Clarke, and Major Burwell Smith, and men of the Upper Ninety-Six Regiment South Carolina Militia under Col. Andrew Pickens. Many others fought on this ground, and some were wounded or died here, but left no official record of their service. Documentation of service has been found in Revolutionary War pension statements, military service records, land grants records, the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and the Auditor General Account Book, 1778 - 1780, of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
