At age 14, Samuel Hartford went as a substitute for his brother-in-law so that his sister and her seven little ones would not be deprived of a husband and father's care. He served as a private in the N. Y. Militia, was in the Battle of Niagara, and was honorably discharged Sept. 30, 1818.
