Whose House Is This?
History
3
James Monroe's main house burned after he sold it in the 1820s. This yellow house was built by John E. Massey, a Baptist minister and politician, in the 1870s. Its boxwood gardens gave the property a new orientation and formal layout. The 1818 guesthouse behind the Massey House is original to Monroe's era.
