Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is a federal refuge in western New York between Buffalo and Rochester, centered on a broad wetland landscape along Oak Orchard Creek. Established in 1958 and soon renamed to avoid confusion with a neighboring wildlife management area, it is part of the Alabama Swamp Complex, a major protected habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Its 10,828 acres include diked pools, swamps, meadows, fields, and woodlands, with access carefully limited to protect nesting and wetland conditions. The refuge remains an Important Bird Area and one of western New York’s principal wetland reserves for wildlife and seasonal observation.
