Fort Wayne is a star-shaped fort built in the 1840s as the third bastion protecting the river approach to Detroit against a feared British invasion from Canada that never came. Named for General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, who accepted Detroit's surrender from the British in 1796, it never fired hostile shots but served as a mobilization center for Union troops during the Civil War. Regiments from Fort Wayne later served in the Indian conflicts, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and World War I. Still active in the 1920s, it housed a Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression, became a wartime supply depot in World War II, served as an induction center during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and after federal deactivation in 1967, it operated as a military museum under the Detroit Historical Commission.
