The south enlisted men's barracks was a two-story log structure with raised stone platforms in the center of the foundations to help support the wooden floors. The building also served as a schoolroom for the officers' children and as a church on Sundays. Excavations uncovered small objects including children's clay marbles, a fragment of a slate, a slate pencil probably used for school lessons, and a fine-toothed comb made from cow horn that was probably used to remove lice, which plagued everyone at the fort. During down time, officers occupied themselves with music on the jaw harp or games with dominos made from bone, and both of these items were found during excavations of Fort Atkinson.
