Zurich Bog is a 490-acre sphagnum bog in Arcadia, New York, valued for its distinctive wetland ecology and studied by scientists since the 19th century. It became part of a wider conservation effort in western New York when, on December 10, 1957, Lyman Stuart and the Newark School District donated the land to the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society. That society, founded in 1935 to protect the similar Bergen-Byron Swamp, helped secure the bog’s long-term preservation. Zurich Bog later gained national recognition as a National Natural Landmark in May 1973.
