General Dynamic F-16 Fighting Falcon
Military
3
The F-16 Fighting Falcon became numerically the most important fighter in the Western world's inventory. Developed for the U.S. Air Force, it embodied lessons learned over Vietnam and was designed as an inexpensive, small version of the F-15. Because it possessed some characteristics of contemporary Soviet fighters, the U.S. Navy purchased 26 F-16s for use in the aggressor role at its famous "Top Gun" School at Miramar, California. The Soviet-style camouflage on this particular aircraft was typical of the aggressors used at "Top Gun." F-16s had a maximum gross weight of 25,000 pounds and a top speed over Mach 2. They are used by many Western nations and will continue in service well into the next generation.
