The Pacific Electric Railroad was once the world's largest interurban and street railway system, with a hub in Los Angeles and lines extending west to Santa Monica, south to Newport Beach, and east into Redlands and Riverside. Its distinctive red rail cars gave it the nickname Red Line. Completed in 1914, the San Bernardino line was the system's longest line, with stations in Claremont, Upland, Alta Loma, Etiwanda, Fontana, and Rialto, and an adjoining line from Rialto running south through Bloomington into Riverside; by the mid-1920s, the main San Bernardino line had been extended to Redlands. The construction of the Alta Loma and Etiwanda depots in 1915 spurred the development of those communities as businesses grew around the depots, and those communities later joined with Cucamonga to form the City of Rancho Cucamonga. The San Bernardino line was crucial to the development of the Inland Empire because it carried passengers by day between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, reducing travel from a trip of multiple days to less than two hours between downtown Los Angeles and San Bernardino station, and it carried freight by night, moving local products such as citrus to shipping yards in San Bernardino for distribution across the nation and the world while bringing supplies such as cement, oil, and manufactured goods back to towns along the route. For more than twenty-five years the railroad was successful, but after World War Two its use declined as it could not compete with the rise of the personal automobile and the trucking industry, and by 1953 the Pacific Electric Company had ended passenger service. As of 2010, only two miles of the once-busy San Bernardino line were still being used for freight, and only a few Pacific Electric rail cars remained in museums or in the possession of railroad enthusiasts.
