One mile north stood the estate of Major Thomas Ridley. During the servile insurrection of August 1831, faithful slaves fortified the houses there and made them a place of refuge for fugitive whites. In this vicinity Nat Turner, the leader of the insurrection, spent the night after his defeat near Courtland on August 23, 1831.
