The plot was dedicated in 1916 in memory of the veterans of the Civil War, 1861—1865, for the future observance of Memorial Day. It honored men who lived so that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people might not perish from the earth, and it called on sons, daughters, and all who remembered the great sacrifices made to save an undivided Union to assemble there on Memorial Day.
