Dix National Forest in New Jersey was created by the U.S. Forest Service on April 10, 1925, from 6,785 acres of the Fort Dix Military Reservation, but it existed only briefly. The executive order establishing it was rescinded on April 6, 1928, ending the forest after just three years. Its significance lies less in a long institutional life than in its place as a small, unusual episode in the early development of the national forest system.
