Odessa Meteor Crater in West Texas is one of only three recognized impact crater sites in Texas and consists of a cluster of craters rather than a single bowl. Formed in prehistoric times when thousands of iron meteorites struck the area, the site’s main crater is about 550 feet across and roughly 63,500 years old. Once about 100 feet deep, it has gradually filled to a depression about 15 feet deep today. More than 1,500 meteorite fragments have been found nearby. Scientific attention began after a 1921 discovery, and early study of the site helped establish terminology for similar impact features worldwide.
