Two hundred forty-eight soldiers of Task Force 3-502, Multinational Force and Observers, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) perished at Gander, Newfoundland, on 12 December 1985 while returning from peacekeeping duty in the Sinai Peninsula. Their loss was mourned by their families, friends, neighbors, and comrades. Major General Burton D. Patrick, commanding general of the 101st Airborn Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, honored them as courageous peacekeepers who had ascended to heights where even Screaming Eagles could not fly, and Isaiah 40:30-31 invoked the image of renewing strength and mounting up with wings as eagles.
