Around 1902, the first sawmill at Sims was built, and logs were transported to it by horses and steam donkeys. To increase productivity, a small logging railroad was built at Sims in 1913, using a small steam locomotive with flat cars to carry logs to the mill. Water kept in a tank like this one was heated by burning wood, and the steam produced was held under pressure and used to power the locomotive.
