San Gabriel Peak is a summit in California’s San Gabriel Mountains within Angeles National Forest. The United States Geological Survey assigned its current name in 1894, replacing the earlier name The Commodore, which honored Commodore Perry Switzer. Its present name derives from the Misión del Santo Arcangel San Gabriel de los Temblores, the same origin for the names of the San Gabriel River, San Gabriel Canyon, the mountain range, and the broader San Gabriel Valley. A defining feature of the peak is its steep south face, which drops about 1,000 feet into the amphitheater at the head of Eaton Canyon and forms one of the most sustained steep slopes in the western San Gabriel range.
