Mount Sequoyah is a 6,003-foot mountain on the Tennessee–North Carolina line in the Great Smoky Mountains, with four small peaks and an Appalachian Trail crossing at its summit. Despite the trail, it remains one of the most remote places in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as the nearest parking area is still 11.5 miles away on foot. Named for Sequoyah, creator of the Cherokee syllabary, the mountain stands near lands where Cherokee villages existed when European settlers arrived in the early 18th century. Surveyor Arnold Guyot crossed it in the late 1850s while tracing the Smokies crest, and the trail’s construction in 1935 brought limited human presence to an otherwise deeply backcountry summit.
