Grace Bedell Billings, born in 1848 and later a longtime resident of Delphos, became known as Lincoln's Little Correspondent after writing presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln from Westfield, N.Y., on Oct. 15, 1860, when she was 11 years old, urging him to grow a beard because she believed it would improve his appearance and help win votes. In her letter, she told him that all the ladies liked whiskers and would urge their husbands to vote for him, adding that then he would be president. Lincoln replied from Springfield, Illinois, on October 19, 1860, acknowledging her letter, telling her about his family, and questioning whether people would think it silly for him to begin wearing whiskers then. After his election, Lincoln's train was routed through Westfield, where he asked for his Little Correspondent, kissed her, and told Grace that he had let his whiskers grow for her. Grace later married and moved to Kansas about 1871, living the rest of her adult life in Delphos.
