Old Wheeler County Jail, 1886

Built in 1886, the Old Wheeler County Jail was the first jail in the Panhandle of Texas and served as a central holding place for badmen. It was built at a cost of $18,500, including $1200 for a hangman's device installed to meet a state requirement. The stone used in its construction was quarried on the farm of Emanuel Dubbs, the first county judge.
