Joseph Vincent McCarthy, born in Germantown, PA, was regarded as the greatest manager of all time. He won nine pennants and seven World Series championships, entered the Hall of Fame in 1957, became the first manager to win pennants in both major leagues, led the Yankees to seven pennants and six World Series titles in a seven-year stretch, and his Yankees never finished below the first division. He claimed Buffalo as his home and died there in 1978 at the age of 91.
