Jekyll Island, a Georgia barrier island in the Sea Islands and Golden Isles, combines resort use with protected natural and historic landscapes. Used seasonally by Indigenous peoples before European arrival, it later saw Spanish and French claims, British-era plantations, and the 1742 construction of Horton House for Major William Horton. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became an elite retreat centered on the Jekyll Island Club Historic District. The island also figured in the secret 1910 meeting that helped shape later Federal Reserve legislation. Its beaches, marshes, wildlife, and preserved sites also include the painful history of the 1858 slave ship The Wanderer landing.
