Catherines Town was a Seneca village destroyed by a Continental Army under General John Sullivan. After the British and Indians were defeated at the battle of Newtown on August 29, 1779, they retreated here, where a two days' war council resulted in the abandonment of their villages, orchards, and crops, and in a further retreat to the protection of the British at Fort Niagara. It was the home of Catherine Montour, sister of "Queen" Esther Montour of Wyoming notoriety and reputed grand-daughter of Madame Montour, interpretess for the Colony of New York in the early 16th century.
