Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife Area in Fulton County, Illinois, along the Illinois River, is a 4,363-acre reclaimed wetland landscape of more than 200 lakes, marshes, floodplain forest, wetlands, and grasslands. Once a bottomland lake and marsh, it was leveed and drained for farming between 1910 and 1958, and about 90 percent of the land was strip-mined from the late 1880s into the mid-1980s. After the Illinois Department of Natural Resources acquired the property in the 1980s, reclamation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was completed in May 2003, creating improved habitat for fish, waterfowl, migratory birds, and other wildlife.
