The success of “D-Day” in Birmingham led to “Double D-Day,” when about 2,000 more children skipped school to protest after the youths poured out of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. The use of schoolchildren in the Movement unnerved Police Commissioner “Bull” Connor and the rest of Birmingham, and after being caught off guard the first day, Connor was ready with harsher tactics. As television cameras rolled, he shouted, “Let ’em have it!” and firemen unleashed high-pressure hoses on the children. Police K-9 units and their dogs were then sent against young protestors and bystanders on 6th Avenue North. The demonstrations had gone on for a month and were in violation of court orders, and few of the children reached City Hall that day.
