The Arboretum at Penn State is a 370-acre arboretum and botanical garden beside the University Park campus in State College. Planned in the late 1990s and advanced by a major gift in 2007, it opened its first major garden phase in 2009 and was officially dedicated in 2010. Its designed spaces include the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens, Childhood’s Gate Children’s Garden, and the Pollinator and Bird Garden, alongside event lawns, water features, and seasonal plantings. The landscape also preserves natural areas such as Hartley Wood, a rare native prairie, marsh meadow, and Big Hollow, combining horticulture, habitat conservation, and campus culture.
