On July 22, 1864, Walker's division, commanded by Gen. Hugh Mercer, was deployed for an attack up Sugar Creek Valley to the northwest against the Federal rear, with Stevens' Brigade under Col. J.C. Nisbet on the right, Gist's Brigade on the left, and Mercer's Brigade under Col. Wm. Barkuloo in support, while Bate's division was on the right east of the creek. The attack became a surprise assault not on the Federal rear but on the front of Mersy's Brigade of Sweeny's division with artillery, supported by one of Fuller's brigades, all 16th A.C. troops. Cleburne's and Maney's divisions struck the Federal left flank on Flat Shoals Road west of here and drove it northward to Leggett's Hill.
