Seeking to help Medina grow, businessman Brown H. Stokes (1897-1940) established Stokes Tourist Courts on his 11-acre riverfront property and family homestead. By 1939, the courts included 10 cottages built by local masons the Lestourgeon brothers, Hough, Wallace, and Russell. The cottages had full baths and kitchenettes, and they housed Medina School teachers and accommodated early auto travelers. In the 1940s, new owners renamed the property River Oaks Courts and added a four-plex structure. It continued operating for decades as a hotel and long-term rental property, contributing to Medina's tourist industry and heritage.
