On July 17, 1864, Palmer’s 14th and Hooker’s 20th A.C. crossed to the Fulton Co. side of the river on two pontoon bridges at Pace’s Ferry. This passage was covered by Wood’s 4th A.C. division, which marched down Mt. Paran Rd. from Power’s Ferry, 3 miles north. To divert Johnston’s forces to crossings below, Stoneman’s cavalry was sent south on July 13 to threaten the A. and W. P.R.R. When it returned on July 16, Blair’s 17th A.C. began its 29-mile march from Turner’s Ferry to Roswell, where it crossed on the 17th. Together, that movement and the passage of the 14th and 20th Corps at Pace’s completed the crossing of the Federal infantry.
