Lake Whitney State Park is a 775-acre state park on the east shore of Lake Whitney near Whitney, Texas. The reservoir was created in 1951 when the United States Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Brazos River to reduce flooding downstream, including at Waco, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department leased the park land from the Department of the Army in 1954 before opening the park in 1965. The park centers on water recreation such as fishing, swimming, boating, and water skiing, while also offering trails, camping, and ranger-led nature programs. Its Washita Prairie setting supports grassland, woodland, and diverse wildlife, including nearly 200 bird species.
