The Lincoln Highway, conceived in 1913 by the Lincoln Highway Association to promote automobile travel in the United States, was the first road across the United States and traversed this section of Ophir Road. Ophir Road was later U.S. 40, the main route over the Sierras until Interstate 80 was built. Pieces of pavement here came from those two historic highway segments.
