The Army of the Potomac’s cavalry moved on several routes as the First and Second Brigades of the First Cavalry Division marched from Westminster and the Reserve Cavalry of the First Cavalry Division from Gettysburg en route to Frederick. The Second Brigade of the Second Cavalry Division marched from Westminster by way of Emmitsburg to Monterey. The Third Brigade of the Second Cavalry Division moved from Gettysburg to Hunterstown, and the Third Cavalry Division marched from Gettysburg by way of Emmitsburg to Monterey. These movements were accompanied by a fight at Monterey Gap, Pennsylvania, and skirmishes at Fairfield Gap, Pennsylvania, and near Emmitsburg, Maryland.
