Sugar Bowl Ski Resort near Donner Pass opened in 1939 on ground long tied to Sierra crossing routes, from the Emigrant Trail at Roller Pass to railroad and highway corridors. Developed by Austrian skier Hannes Schroll with support from local investors, it reflected his vision of a Tyrolean-style village and took its name from the area's fine crystalline snow. Sugar Bowl became California's first ski area with a chairlift and soon gained prominence for its challenging terrain, heavy snowfall, major competitions, and Hollywood visitors. After wartime decline, it expanded while remaining privately owned, linking modern recreation with the longer transportation and skiing history of Donner Pass.
