LT Kara Hultgreen of the United States Navy piloted an F-14-D Tomcat with the Black Lions of Fighter Squadron 213 during training operations on 25 October 1994 in preparation for deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). On final approach that day, her aircraft experienced engine failure and crashed in the Pacific, while her crewman survived. Her determination and perseverance helped her become the Navy's first woman carrier-based combat fighter pilot. She is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
