A thousand years ago, the Jornada Mogollon people lived in houses whose great mass helped keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. The fireplace served for both heating and cooking, and an animal hide might have been used as the door. These houses are thought to have been single-family residences. The people who lived in them were farmers who raised corn, beans, and squash along with the wild foods they collected, and they depended on hunting for their meat supply.
