Butler County was formed from Allegheny County on March 12, 1800. It was named for General Richard Butler, a Revolutionary officer. George Washington crossed this area in 1753 while still a young man. The county seat was established at Butler in 1803, and the county was home to the Harmony Society from 1804 to 1815.
