On July 23, 1872, two American Indian brothers from the White Earth Nation were killed at this location by a vigilante group after being accused in the disappearance of a 22-year-old woman from Crow Wing Village, though they never stood trial. On June 18, 2014, a reconciliation ceremony between the City of Brainerd and the American Indian community dedicated a monument here. The day included comments from Chairwoman Erma J. Vizenor and Brainerd Mayor James E. Wallin, and Wallin proclaimed June 18, 2014, a day of reconciliation as the city remembered past misdeeds and harms, recognized the historic and current role of American Indians and the self-governance and cultural heritage of neighboring tribes, and looked toward mutual understanding, acceptance, and constructive relations.
