Oak Island Light stands at Caswell Beach near the mouth of the Cape Fear River as a modern coastal beacon on one of the last lighthouses built in the United States. Constructed in 1957–58 and placed in service in May 1958, it replaced the Cape Fear Light on Bald Head Island and for several years was the brightest lighthouse in the country. Its 153-foot poured-concrete tower is distinctive for its black, white, and natural gray sections and its steep straight-run stairs. Later changes included transfer of ownership to Caswell Beach, National Register listing, exterior rehabilitation, and a 2020 LED upgrade that preserved its historic flash pattern.
