General Washington resigned his commission at Annapolis on December 23, 1783. The American Revolution officially ended when Congress met in Annapolis on January 14, 1783. The District of Columbia was given to the nation in 1791. Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Baltimore in September 1814. The nation's first national highway, railroad, and telegraph were established in Maryland.
