The Playwicki Farm Labyrinth was inspired by the ancient Vesica Pisces symbol of harmony and unity, in which two symmetrical circles overlap to form an eye-shaped center enclosing shared common ground. Following the events of 9-11, designer Connie Fenty of Common Grounds Labyrinths created this pattern to be walked for reflection and meditation, with the intent of offering a way to experience harmony by bringing differences into balance through the discovery of commonality. Evidence of labyrinth patterns dates back as far as 1300 B.C., and although their history is mysterious, they are believed to have been used by many ancient cultures, including Greek, Peruvian, Native American, and European peoples. One of the oldest labyrinths still being walked today is on the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. In a modern revival, labyrinths are found in retreat centers, parks, school yards, hospitals, and private gardens. This labyrinth was completed in spring 2007, built largely by community volunteers with assistance from the Lower Southampton Public Works Department, and dedicated in memory of Sue McKeon, former Lower Southampton Township Manager and Supervisor, whose love of Playwicki Farm helped preserve the property for the community's enjoyment and helped make the labyrinth possible.
