Gungywamp in Groton, Connecticut, is an archaeological site with stone features, artifacts, and colonial-era structural remains spread across a broad working landscape. Its intact stone chambers are generally understood as root cellars, notable especially for their number. The site also includes house remains, a storage building, and possible cloth- and iron-processing areas, indicating sustained colonial activity. Near the center, a double stone circle identified as Native American in manufacture has been interpreted as part of a bark mill for tanning. Although some have proposed transatlantic origins for certain structures, archaeologists find no evidence beyond Native American construction. In 2023, Gungywamp became a State Archaeological Preserve.
