Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park protects 4,290 acres of wet prairie and bayou landscape along Florida’s Gulf Coast near Pensacola. It is especially important for its exceptional concentration of rare species, most notably endangered pitcher plants. Four pitcher plant species grow here, including the white-top pitcher plant, a carnivorous plant unique to the Gulf Coast between the Apalachicola and Mississippi rivers. Nearly 100 other rare plants and animals also depend on this habitat, such as the sweet pitcher plant, Chapman’s butterwort, and the alligator snapping turtle. The preserve remains significant as a refuge for a scarce and specialized coastal ecosystem.
