On July 3, 1758, British forces under Captain Bradstreet repulsed an attack by French and Indian forces here and on an adjacent island that is now nearly submerged. In 1916, Frederick A. Emerick acquired this historical site and presented it to the State of New York, under the jurisdiction of the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society, as a place for the pleasure and recreation of the public.
