Army Sgt. Merit Burt of the 23rd Infantry was killed in action at Chanteaur, France, on Aug. 13, 1944, at 27 years of age. He came ashore on D-Day+1 and immediately entered hedgerow fighting that culminated in the seizure of the city of Brest. He lived on Hanna Lane in Londonderry, attended Southeastern H.S., and was one of 10 children. His family remembered him as their son, brother, cousin, and uncle, and expressed their pride and thanks.
