Following the base of San Pablo Ridge, the California & Nevada Railroad ran here. Incorporated in 1881, its founders planned a line from Emeryville to Nevada, but it never extended beyond Orinda. Until service ended in 1900, the narrow gauge railroad earned money hauling farm produce and carrying popular holiday excursions to picnic sites along San Pablo Creek. The planned town of Olinda was never realized along the route, but its name survives in Olinda Road and Olinda Elementary School.
