A section of the Erie Extension Canal linking New Castle and Erie lies at the foot of the slope to the left of the side road. The Conneaut Line, running from Erie to Conneaut Lake, was begun by the state in 1838 and finished in 1843-44 by a company headed by R.S. Reed of Erie.
