The segregated school along the North Fork of the Blackwater served Coketon, a center of the coal and coke empire of H. G. Davis. In 1892, teacher Carrie Williams, represented by J. R. Clifford, the state’s first African American lawyer, sued when the county reduced the school’s term. She won equal pay and equal terms for black students in West Virginia. The school closed in 1954.
