In Madison County, Missouri, the first lead mine in the Mississippi Valley opened at Mine La Motte about the year 1700, Saint Michael French Village started about 1799, Madison County was approved December 14, 1818, Fredericktown was laid out in 1819, copper was discovered at Copper Mines in 1838, Buckeye Copper Mines opened in 1844 and became Missouri Cobalt in 1916, the Battle of Fredericktown was fought October 21, 1861, Marquand was founded in 1869, Tin Mountain Mine opened in 1870, Silvermine produced silver in 1877, and Catherine Mine opened in 1899.
