Traditionally, the healing properties of the mineral water of a spring here were discovered by the owner while treating her pet dog for mange. Its use by humans spread, and by 1895 three hotels and many boarding houses hosted people from all over America. Fire destroyed the largest hotel in 1910, and visitors to the resort dropped off. The mineral water was bottled and widely shipped until 1943.
